The Black Cloud is a community air enrichment project run in beta form in Los Angeles. It ran at Manual Arts High School and moved to the Machine Project for a grand finale.

June 2008:

This year I continued my thankga painting lessons with Dong Samin and Kopens Lama. Priming my own canvas was a new experience, and a very cool one.

I also returned to Papa’s Home and Papa’s Home 2.

Some bandits ran off with this piece a few days after installation. Luckily, Evelyn Williamson took these beautiful photographs. They are the only remaining record. The smoker is Margie Kalhor.

What I am for now calling the meditation cube is device I am working with to develop paintings. It functions as four one-pixel cameras controlling four motors. Between the motors bounces a network of springs holding a paintbrush, pallet knife, or any tool. A piece of tubing allows paint, ink, or any liquid medium to reach the canvas. An artificial lung below the canvas inhales and exhales, affecting the pressure of the tool on the painting.

Summer 2007: Nepal Orphans’ Home

I spent this summer in a small town called Dhapasi, outside Kathmandu. I volunteered for an incredible man named Michael Hess; the director of a home for children. I lived with about 33 children, now my brothers and sisters.Here I am in my room with some of the girls.. Kausila in my arms, Mary on the left, and the ever energetic Anu and Puja taking the photo and giggling like mad.
Three older boys, Saroj, Hikmat & Chaam lived in the room next door to mine, so I gave them drawing & computer lessons between dinner and bed most nights. They wrote stories, drew in Photoshop, played with photos, and made these amazing stop motion animations.

This is the view from our rooftop. The houses sat snugly against each other sewn together with precarious wiring schemes. There were scheduled power outs throughout the week. Neighborhoods in the area take turns with electricity during the heavily burdened early evening hours.

I functioned as a Graduate Student Instructor for Greg Niemeyer. This involved active experimentation with free & social internet tools: Google Groups, Spreadsheets & Docs, Flickr, Facebook, Processing, w3 Schools, etc.

As the course progressed, the data accrued from the students was added to a Processing application. The weight of their backpacks correlates to the size of a ball, bouncing around on a velocity inversely proportional to the backpack weight. The number that appears with a mouse hover is the one they selected as their folder number on the school’s server. A double click leads to their individual website.

The links between nodes reflect a trust network– each student reported which of their classmates sites they most trusted.

A camera controlled game of camouflage and color matching.
Built in collaboration with Braden Kowitz and Naomi Augustine.

This is a screencap during gameplay. In the bottom left is the feed from the webcam.

Color is sampled in the game from the circle in the center of the webcam.

At each stage of the game, two creatures appear of random color. In order to keep the fish alive, the player determines which creature is friendlier, and matches its color. If the choice and color are correct, the friendly animal will defend the fish. If the choice is incorrect, the less friendly creature eats you.

This frame shows a recently deceased fish, floating upside-down towards the top with an X for an eye.

The creatures are hand painted excepting the fish, which is vector rendered in order to make it more dynamic. This game was built while I was still just a fake student at Berkeley, unofficially auditing Greg Niemeyer’s Film Studies 181: Game Theory course.
